FAQs: answers to your questions

Commonly Asked Questions

Will a hearing aid restore my hearing to normal?

While hearing aids can't fully restore normal hearing, they can help immensely. At Amplifon, we support you as you adapt to your hearing aids.

Who will fit my hearing aid? Are they qualified?

Each device will be customised to suit your needs by a fully qualified clinician using state-of-the-art fitting equipment.

We only employ hearing healthcare professionals who are members of Approved Professional Bodies (APBs). At Amplifon, our audiologists and audiometrists are members of Audiology Australia, the Australian College of Audiology or the Hearing Aid Audiometrist Society of Australia, which are recognised bodies of the Hearing Services Program (HSP) and state-based workers compensation authorities. Every one of our clinicians, as members of APBs, are subject to a strict Code of Conduct.

What is the “best” hearing aid on the market?

The simplest answer to this question is the one that fits, feels and works best for you. There are a variety of factors we’ll discuss that help to determine the exact model and programming that works best. In the end, you’ll have a hearing aid that’s been created just for you to address your specific needs. Some of the factors determining which hearing aid is right for you include your type of hearing loss, your lifestyle, comfort level, and price.

What happens if my hearing aid malfunctions?

Amplifon has more than 300 locations nationwide, meaning that wherever you travel in Australia, you’re likely to be near a Amplifon clinic that will be happy to help you. If you are travelling overseas, then you are in luck! Amplifon is the world’s largest retailer of hearing aids, and you are covered by our worldwide global coverage. To view our global network visit the Amplifon website.

What hearing aid features are available?

Advances in digital technology make modern hearing aids work better, adapt faster, and feel more comfortable than ever before. They’re like mini–computers performing thousands of calculations a second. The features of modern hearing aids include automatic feedback suppression, background noise reduction, and remote controls, to name a few. The amount of features your hearing aid has depends on your needs and personal choice. We’ll help you to discover which suits you best.

Is Amplifon owned by a hearing aid manufacturer?

No, Amplifon is Australia's largest independent hearing service provider and is not owned by a hearing aid manufacturer. We provide unbiased advice on the best hearing loss treatments to suit your lifestyle, hearing loss condition and budget.

How often should I have my hearing tested?

If you are over 50 we recommend you check your ears every 2 years.
If you are under 50 we recommend you check your ears every 10 years.

The sooner a hearing problem is detected, the better it can be treated. Amplifon offers free hearing tests.

If you already own a hearing aid, they should also be checked and cleaned once a year to keep them working at peak performance.

How long does it take to adjust to a hearing aid?

It can take several weeks to completely adjust to new hearing aids. Hearing tends to deteriorate gradually over time, so when sounds are reintroduced to the brain quickly, it can be a bit disorienting at first.

This adjustment period is essential to ensuring you receive the maximum benefit from your hearing aids and that is why Amplifon offers a 30 day money back guarantee, as well as counselling and rehabilitation tactics from a qualified practitioner, to help you adapt to your new hearing aids

How long do hearing aid batteries last?

This depends – the harder your hearing aid has to work to process the sound, the more power it will require. Anything from a couple of days to a week would be expected. If it is less than this, let us know. Your hearing aid may need to be repaired. Your clinician will let you know the average battery drain time for your type of hearing aid batteries and hearing aids.

How do I know what size hearing aid I need?

Your ideal hearing aid size depends upon your hearing loss, your ear canal size and your personal preference. The smallest hearing aid available is the Completely In the Canal (CIC) style, which fits deep into your ear canal. It’s removed by pulling a small, nearly invisible cord. The next size up is an In The Canal (ITC) hearing aid, which fits into your ear canal and is usually only visible from the side. Behind The Ear (BTE) hearing aids sit on top of your ear and go behind it.

Do I need two hearing aids?

If you have a hearing loss in both ears, it’s recommended that you wear a hearing aid in each ear. We were all born with two ears for a reason, from determining the direction of sound to boosting the volume of the sounds we hear.

Can I just buy a hearing aid online?

Amplifon provides a range of services to look after all your hearing needs, from diagnosing hearing difficulties to fitting, servicing and maintaining hearing aids. Safe and effective hearing aid use requires the presence of qualified hearing healthcare professionals at every stage of the process, from a comprehensive hearing assessment, understanding your lifestyle, budget and expectations, and the selection of the device to the fitting of the device and ongoing support, counselling, repairs and maintenance. This level of support is ultimately best for you and your hearing.

Can I afford a hearing aid?

Hearing aid prices not only vary depending upon the model and style chosen, but also upon the degree of your hearing loss and any ongoing maintenance packages you may choose. You may also be eligible for funding for some services and hearing aids via the Hearing Services Program (HSP), and/or your insurance company. We also offer payment plans. It's best to contact your local clinic to discuss the funding options available to you and your personal circumstances.

Can a hearing aid eliminate background noise?

No, hearing aids can’t completely eliminate background noise, but they can lessen the effects of non-speech noise. Amplifon can help you determine which hearing aid is the best fit for your needs.
