Hearing Aids After Care

How to care for your Hearing Aids

It’s important to take care of your hearing aids not only to maintain high performance levels, but to help minimise any potential problems you may experience with everyday use. A hearing aid is made up of several different parts, each of which will need regular cleaning to ensure maximum performance and life span. If you need extra help you can contact your local clinic who can help you through the process.

Clean daily

Ear wax and dust and debris are not a friendly combination for hearing aids. Each night after you remove your hearing aids, wipe them gently with a tissue or soft cloth. If you are prone to collecting ear wax in the tubes and filters of your hearing aids, use the soft brush and ear pick, that comes with your hearing aids, to remove the excess wax.

Minimise moisture

Moisture build-up is one of the most common reasons why hearing aids need repair. To avoid this problem, you can invest in a hearing aid dehumidifier or drying container. Simply remove your hearing aid batteries and place the hearing aids in the container. Overnight, the dehumidifier will dry them out. Contact your local Amplifon clinic to find out about purchasing a dehumidifier.

Store your hearing aids carefully

To help prolong battery life, open the battery door each night to disconnect the batteries - there is no need to remove the batteries completely from your hearing aids. Store them in a cool, dry place. We recommend keeping them in the same place everyday and ensure that they are kept out of harms way - such as where pets or children may be able to reach them.

Tips for all devices

Your hearing aids need care to keep them performing as they should. Here are some handy tips for maintaining your hearing aids.

1. Brush every day

Use the cleaning brush provided to remove wax from your device every day before you put them on, particularly around the microphone and the sound outlet.

Face the area you are brushing toward the floor, helping loosened wax to wall away.

2. Use the Cloth

Wipe any visible dirt or debris from your hearing aids with the small, machine-washable cloth in your cleaning kit.

3. Clean in the Morning

Wax is easier to clean away in the morning, as it hardens overnight.

4. Avoid Moisture

Keep your hearing aids away from water, hairspray and other fluids.

Tips for Specific Devices

  1. RIC: The dome that sits on the end of the receiver (speaker) will need replacing when wax builds up, as will the white filter that sits underneath it. When needed, use the pen-like tool provided to remove the filter and use the other end to insert a new one before replacing the dome on the receiver.

  2. BTE: Use the small loop at the end of the brush to pick wax away from the sound outlet.

  3. Custom: To replace the small white filter when wax builds up or if sound is not coming through clearly, push the end of the pen-like tool provided into the hole at the top of the filter, then pull it away. To insert a replacement, flip the rool over then press the new filter into place.
