Why put drops in the ear?

Ear drops are a type of medication or non-medicinal solution used to alleviate or treat ear discomfort. This article will delve into how to properly use ear drops and highlight the side effects that can arise from improper usage.

How to properly use ear drops

Ear drops used to treat ear infections or to clear earwax. Here's a guide on how to properly use them:

  • Warm the bottle of ear drops by rubbing it between your hands. Warming the drops helps to reduce discomfort caused by the cold or hot sensation in the ear canal.
  • Test the temperature of the drops by putting a drop on your hand.
  • Have the person receiving the drops tilt their head so that the affected ear faces upward.
  • Clean and dry the visible outer part of the ear if necessary.
  • Position the bottle over the ear canal, making sure the drops can easily flow into the canal.
  • Squeeze the bottom of the dropper to dispense the required number of drops.
  • Have the person lie down for a minute or two after receiving the drops to allow the medication to be absorbed.
  • Gently massage the ear to promote absorption of the medication.

In the next section, we will discuss the appropriate treatment options based on the cause of the problem.

Ear drops for ear wax

For earwax-related issues, using emollient ear drops directly in the ear canal is recommended. These drops effectively dissolve compacted earwax and facilitate its release.

Ear drops for ear infection

When an ear infection occurs, anti-inflammatory ear drops containing white vinegar and drops containing a corticosteroid such as hydrocortisone or dexamethasone to be used several times a day for up to a week are usually administered. However, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a doctor or pharmacist before using any medication.

Possible side effects of ear drops

Depending on an individual's sensitivity to the substance. Ear drops can have a few possible side effects. The most frequent symptoms include: allergic reactions; Dizziness; redness.

If you experience one or more of these symptoms after using ear drops, it is best to seek medical attention.

Side effects due to incorrect dosage

It is quite common for incorrect dosage to be the underlying reason of side effects. In some cases, too many drops may accumulate in the ear, leading to discomfort. Alternatively, if cotton is used, it may soak up excessive amounts of the liquid, resulting in symptoms such as dizziness, redness, or itching.

Side effects due to the use of alternatives drops

Sometimes, side effects may stem from using incorrect medicines or natural remedies. For example, olive oil, which was supposed to be a solution, can sometimes be detrimental. If a small amount of liquid is placed in the ear and gets stuck in the ear canal, it can settle on the eardrum and result in temporary deafness, earache, and a h eightened risk of infections.

Taking other medicines and using ear drops

If you are taking other medications, you should notify your doctor or pharmacist as the ear drops may interfere with the treatment.

Ear drops and hearing aids

When you wear a hearing aid but have to use ear drops, it's important to be especially careful as side effects may occur more frequently. This is because the liquid can remain in the ear canal, causing an increase in moisture and promoting the growth of bacteria, which could penetrate deeper into the ear. To prevent this, after administering the ear drops, make sure that the liquid has been thoroughly absorbed and the ear is completely dry before putting your hearing aid back on.

When to contact a doctor

If the ear drop treatment does not alleviate your ear pain, it is important to contact your medical professional for a more complete diagnosis and to determine which type of treatment might be most appropriate.
